Abstract

1,152,651. Magnetic compositions. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. 24 April, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 21545/66. Heading H1H. A magnetic recording medium comprising a powdered magnetic material dispersed in a binder and coated on to a non-magnetic base, contains as lubricant mixed with the binder the compound Cl-(CF 2 -CFCl) n -Cl, where n is at least 5. The amount of lubricant may be 3-6% by wt. based on the magnetic material. The coating may contain 65-85% magnetic material, which may be γ-Fe 2 O 3 (0À2-2 Á. Á long, 0À02-0À6 Á wide), magnetite, or a mixed ferrite. The binder may be an isocyanate modified polyester or polyester amide, a polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride or acetate, a copolymer of vinyl alcohol with vinyl chloride, acetate, or butyral or with vinylidene chloride, a copolymer of acrylonitrile with vinylidene chloride, or polybutyl acrylate. In the example, a mixture of a polyvinyl chloride-acetatealcohol and a polyester amide (made from ethylene glycol, adipic acid, and ethanolamine) modified with hexamethylene diisocyanate, was used. The constituents of the coating are mixed with a solvent, e.g. aromatic hydrocarbon, or 1,2-dichloroethane, and a dispersing agent, in a ball mill, and coated on to the base, which may be a disc, drum, or tape of metal, glass, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose triacetate, P.V.C., or paper, and may be 0À01-0À06 mm. thick.
