Abstract

1,102,968. Magnetic compositions. SONY CORPORATION. 3 Dec., 1965 [5 Dec.. 1964], No. 51397/65. Heading HlH. A magnetic composition comprises powdered magnetic material and a binder together with 0À5-20 parts by weight per 100 parts magnetic material of one or more fatty acid esters produced from a monohydroxy alcohol having at least 14 carbon atoms and one or more monobasic fatty acids having 2-18 carbon atoms. The acid may be saturated, or have a degree of unsaturation up to an iodine value of 10. Esters exemplified are stearyl butyrate, stearyl stearate, stearyl laurate, and tetradecyl caprilate. The composition may be dispersed in a solvent, e.g. toluene or methyl ethyl ketone, and coated on a base, e.g. a polyester film, to form magnetic recording tape, e.g. 10Á thick. The magnetic material may be acicular y-Fe 2 O 3 or an alloy of 30-70% Fe, 40-80% Co and 0-20% Ni by weight. The binder may be P.V.C., polyvinyl acetate, polybutyl acrylate, or copolymers thereof, polyurethane, epoxy resin, or mixtures thereof. Plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate or cebatate may be included.
