Abstract

1416200 Magnetic recording media BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 8 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 56640/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division Dl] A process for the production of a magnetic recording medium comprises applying a layer of a fluid magnetic dispersion of uniaxially shaped magnetically anisotropic particles to a moving non-magnetisable support on a flat surface, orienting the magnetically anisotropic particles in the still fluid magnetic dispersion in a preferred direction parallel to the flat surface of the support using a uniform magnetic field whose lines of force are parallel to the flat surface and drying the dispersion at least partially within the magnetic field to form a coating and lock the magnetic particles in their oriented positions, the drying being effected at least predominantly by the preferential absorption of electromagnetic radiation by said layer compared with said support. The support may be a web of tape of a disc. The electro-magnetic radiation may be in a wavelength ranged from 0.1 to 11 u or 1 to 100 cm. The drying may be completed in the magnetic field. The magnetic dispersions may contain, in addition to the magnetic particles which may be gamma-iron (III) oxide, chromium dioxide, finely divided magnetite or ferro-magnetic metal pigments, the following binders such as epoxy resins, phenoxy resins, aminoplast precondensates, polyester resins, polyurethanes or polyurethaneforming compounds, polycarbonates, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride copolymers, heat-curable acrylate or methacrylate copolymers. Dispersions may contain volatile solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, toluene and methylethyl ketone. The magnetic tapes may be of cellulose acetate, polyester or polyvinyl chloride and are preferably of polyethylene terephthalate.
