Abstract
1,237,978. Magnetic recording medium. AGFA - GEVAERT - A.G. 12 Aug., 1969 [16 Aug., 1968], No. 40211/69. Heading H1H. A magnetic recording medium comprises a rigid or flexible support e.g. a tape, card or disc, bearing a layer including a magnetizable pigment and, as a binder, a polymer derived from a bifunctional or polyfunctional cyanic acid ester. The polymer may be made by curing a trimer of the cyanic acid ester or by reacting the ester of its trimer with a compound containing -OH or -NH 2 groups, which may itself be polymeric e.g. vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer containing -OH groups. A specified cyanic acid ester is 2,2-bis(4 - cyanatophenyl)- propane. Specified magnetic materials are iron and chromium oxides, ferrites, iron, cobalt and Fe-Ni-Co alloy. Metal, polymeric and paper substrates are specified. The magnetic composition may be cast on to the substrate, and cured by heating. A smooth surface may be obtained by calendering or by grinding and polishing. An adhesive layer between the substrate and magnetic layers may be used, e.g. vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer.
