Abstract
944,864. Magnetic recording medium. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 31, 1962, No. 33560/62. Heading H1H. A magnetic recording medium has adjacent layers of anisotropic magnetic material, one having maximum permeability in a direction in the plane of the layers and the other having maximum permeability in a direction at right angles to the layers. In the Figure, a tape 14, which may be of paper, cellulose acetate or " Mylar " (Registered Trade Mark) is first coated with a layer 15 of particles in a binder, the particles being aligned by a magnetic field, and when the first coating is set a second layer 16 is applied, preferably only 2 or 3 microns thick. The particles of the layer 16 may have a higher coercive force and a lower remanance than those of the layer 15.
