Abstract

1,260,721. Securing railway rails. BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. 8 Jan., 1970 [9 Jan., 1969], No. 1301/69. Heading E1G. In a spring clip rail fastening having laterally-adjustable rail abutments, e.g. for use with variable gauge and/or variable foot-width rails 10, the sleeper or other foundation is provided with abutment shoulders 36 which are inclined to the longitudinal rail axis and are engaged by longitudinally-adjustable L- section spacers 16 having opposed wedge surfaces 32-34, each spacer 16 being held in adjusted position by notches 43 engaged by one arm 22 of a forked plate spring fastening clip 14. The clip 14 bears upon a back support 20 and reaction piece 28. The top web 26 of the spacer 16 has an upstanding flange 38 comprising a notched part 40 for the fork arm 22 and a parallel un-notched part 42 for the fork arm 24. The abutment shoulder 36 is straight, but the cooperating face 34 of the spacer may be slightly curved to cater for misalignment. The spacer 16 is of insulating material, e.g. nylon, and has a row of spaced air pockets (35), Fig. 3 (not shown) of varying size to produce near-uniform resiliency over its length.
