Abstract
1,260,497. Papermaking. KONINKLIJKE PAPIERFABRIEKEN VAN GELDER ZONEN N.V. 12 Sept., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 45212/69. Headings D2A and D2B. Synthetic organic or inorganic fibres are slurried in water or a water-miscible solvent, without binder, a wet web formed on a moving porous carrier, the web is then covered by a belt, and passed through a binder dispersion on the carrier, the web then being freed of excess binder dispersion and passed to a separate drying apparatus. The fibre suspension is preferably partially dewatered prior to entering the binder dispersion. The web may be covered and passed into the binder dispersion round a roller immersed in the dispersion which holds the carrier in tension. The fibres may be of asbestos, glass, polyamide or polyester. The binder may be applied in a solution in water or a water-miscible solvent, when the binder may be starch, a starch derivative, a cellulose derivative, a phenolformaldehyde condensate, or a condensate of formaldehyde with amino compounds or polyamides. The binder may also be applied as an emulsion e.g. when applying a styrenebutadiene latex. An apparatus for carrying out this process is the subject of Specification 1,260,498.
