Abstract
1296511 Paper MONSANTO CO 5 Jan 1970 [6 Jan 1969] 383/70 Heading D2B A preformed web containing cellulosic fibres is sized by the application of a cyclic anhydride of the formula: where R represents dimethylene or trimethylene and R 1 represents an alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, aralkenyl, alkoxy or aralkoxy group of more than five carbon atoms. The anhydride is preferably applied in the form of an aqueous dispersion, which may contain a surfactant, e.g., polyoxyethylenesorbitan trioleate, polyoxyethylenesorbitol hexaoleate, -polyoxyethylenesorbitol laurate or polyoxyethylenesorbitol oleate laurate. The web may be of paper, and may be waterleaf, slacksized or hard-sized. It may contain as well as the cellulosic fibres, fillers, e.g. clay or titanium dioxide, and manmade fibres, e.g. of polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyester or regenerated cellulose. The anhydride may be used in conjunction with starch, a starch derivative or converted starch or a protein. The sizing may be carried out on paper that is dry or is still wet in the course of manufacture.
