Abstract

1,260,101. Pliers. AESCULAP-WERKE AG. 10 Feb., 1970 [15 March, 1969], No. 6328/70. Heading B4W. [Also in Division A5] A surgical retractor comprises a pair of handles 4, 5 pivotally interconnected on a swivel axis 1, an arcuate side bar 7 extending from one handle 4, including an elongated arcuate slot 8, the side nearest the axis 1 having a toothed rim 9, the teeth of which are disposed on an arc or centred at the swivel axis, the other side 15 of slot 8 preventing any inadvertent contact of the user with the rim and the other handle 5 having a member 12 with a spring-urged pawl 16 projecting into the slot 8 to engage the rim 9. A groove 14 allows the pawl 16 to be moved by arm 13 to engage and disengage the teethed rim 9 without interference from the side 15. A leaf spring 17 locks the ratchet and pawl arrangement in use. The handles 4, 5 have arms 2, 3 respectively each arm having fingers 6 which engage the muscles, so that the muscles are moved away on either side.
