Abstract

1,259,890. Cleaning electrostatic surfaces. RANK XEROX Ltd. Aug. 25, 1969 [Aug. 26, 1968(2)], No.42150/69. Heading G2H. An apparatus for removing toner particles 11 from an electrostatic surface 12 comprises a magnetic brush apparatus 20 carrying magnetic cleaning material 28, e.g., alcoholized iron, carboxal iron, steel, nickel-iron alloys, magnetic oxides, and magnetic ferrites which removes the toner particles by triboelectric attraction, which removal is assisted by applying a D. C. potential 30 to cylinder 22. A corona device 35 changes the surface 12 with the same polarity as the toner. A bias roller 40 engaged by a wiper 50, continuously removes toner from the apparatus 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, toner is removed by a fabric cleaning assembly 107 having a cylindrical member 111 carrying fabric cleaning fibres 119 and biased by a D. C. voltage source 133. Cleaning materials may be, for example, acrylic velvet, polypropylene fabric, rayon, mohair; or cotton. A bias roller 150, rotated oppositely to the member 111, is biased by D. C. voltage source 154. An adjustable blade member 179 removes toner particles from the roller 150 for collection in a tray 193 from where they are removed by an auger 195 for reuse. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) an assembly (207) has segments (211) to which different voltages (133 or 275) are applied to improve control in the removal of toner particles.
