Jan. 10, 1969 [March 6, 1968], No. 1684/69. Heading C7U. Verdigns is formed on a copper or copper alloy surface by contacting with a solution (pH 4 to 5) containing ammonium and copper sulphate and mercuric chloride and then drying in an oxygen containing atmosphere. The verdigns so formed may be treated with a solution containing an alkyl (ethyl) nitrite, Examples of solutions are (g/l): (a) (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 70, CuSO 4 SH 2 O 2 , HgCl 2 5, and (b) NH 4 Cl 15, NaCl 50, Cu(NO 3 ) 3H 2 O 100 to which 100 c. c. of 15% alcoholic ethyl nitrite is added. The first solution is dried for 10 to 30 minutes at 5 to 35‹ C. at a humidity of 50 to 90%.
