Abstract

1,259,527. Snap-action switches; retractive switches. CONTROLS CO. OF AMERICA. 11 Nov., 1969 [13 Nov., 1968], No. 55022/69. Heading H1N. A switch comprises a lever 24 pivoted about bosses 22 and carrying a shorting contact 36 which is intended to bridge fixed contacts 40, and a block 28 with a cam surface urged against the pointed tip 26 of lever 24 by a spring 30. If lever 24 is pivoted clockwise from the off position shown, tip 26 first depresses block 28 and then when tip 26 passes over peak 48, spring 30 urges lever 24 into valley 50 into contact with the lower contacts 40, and lever 24 is retained in that position by spring 30 and block 28. If lever 24 is moved anticlockwise from the off position shown, tip 26 depresses block 28 and contact 36 bridges the upper contacts 40, but when lever 24 is released, the cam surface on block 28 urges lever 24 back to the centre off position. The block 28 therefore gives on-offtemporarily on. Blocks are provided with cam surfaces to give on-off-on, Fig. 5 (not shown), temporarily on-off-temporarily on, Fig. 6 (not shown), on-move-temporarily on, Fig. 7 (not shown), on-move-on, Fig. 8 (not shown. Shorting contact 36 is pivoted with limited movement about boss 34 on lever 24 to give self-aligning of the contacts. The housing is in two identical halves 10 which have posts 12 fitting into holes 14, each post 12 having a circumferential ridge 16, Fig. 4 (not shown), snapping into a groove 18, Fig. 4, to hold the two halves together. The switch parts are held in position by the two housing halves. Each contact 40 fits into holes in the two housing halves, each contact 40 having a ridge 46 fitting into a recess at the interface to hold it in position. Contacts 40 project from one or both sides for plugging into a printed circuit board.
