Abstract
1,259,276. Continuous casting. ASHMORE, BENSON, PEASE & CO. Ltd. 11 March, 1969, [12 March, 1968], No. 11885/68. Heading B3F. An open-ended copper mould having a generally square-sectioned cavity 7 with an enlarged cylindrical inlet 9 where it is sealed to the outlet of a tundish, is formed in two halves (one half 2 lying on top of the other half 3, if the mould is used horizontally as indicated) secured together by bolts passing through bores 6<SP>1</SP> and located by dowels 4 and having separate coolant passages, extending from one side 13, Figs. 2, 4, of the mould to the other. Considering the lower mould half 3 (the upper half 2 being similar), each passage at the inlet end comprises interconnected bores 12a, 12b communicating through a surface recess 14 to similar bores at the other side. The recess 14 also provides communication between a bore 12c interconnected with two bores (12d) and a similar arrangement of bores at the other side of the mould. Beyond the recess 14, interconnected bores 12f, 12g, Fig. 4, communicate with similar bores at the other side, by the bore 12g crossing the equivalent bore 12h. These latter bores and the recess 14 are closed by a removable steel base plate and a similar plate (15) is secured at the top of the mould. A coolant manifold (16) is secured to the side wall 13 of the upper mould half 2 and another (17) is secured to the other side. Similar manifolds are secured to the sides of the lower half 3 and the flow of liquid to the two halves can be separately controlled. Rods or tubes may be located in the coolant passages to vary the cooling along the mould length. A lubricating device is located in the inlet 9 of the mould and casting withdrawal means are positioned at the mould outlet.
