Abstract

1305884 I.C. engine cylinder heads USTAV PRO VYZKUM MOTOROVYCH VOZIDEL 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 25910/71 Heading F1B A pressure cast cylinder head 1 has a helically curved inlet or exhaust passage 2 and liquid coolant passages. To facilitate the casting process, the passages are formed by using two mandrels in the casting die, one of which enters the side face of the head and forms the horizontal branch of the passage, and the other of which forms a hole extending right through the head from its upper to its lower face, the lower part of this hole forming the vertical branch 4 of the passage. The upper part of the hole is reamed and an insert 6 is pressed in, the axis of the insert coinciding with the axis of the valve guide and the lower surface of the insert forming a helically curved surface around the lower end 11 of the valve guide 13. The inserts also have an annular groove 12 through which the liquid coolant circulates. Further annular coolant cavities 14 and 15 are positioned around the holes 16 and 17 for the bearing support bolts and the cylinder head bolts respectively. These annular cavities are formed by mandrels which project into the top face of the head during casting. The upper ends of the cavities are closed by annular sheet metal discs. Further cavities 20 are similarly formed during casting and are closed at the upper face of the head by sheet metal plugs. Cavities 25 and 26 are formed by horizontal mandrels during casting and are closed by the flanges of the inlet/exhaust manifold. Cavities 28 and 29 at the ends of cylinder head are closed by oval sheet metal members. A channel 31 extends along the underface of the head. These coolant cavities are connected by drilled channels 32 and 33 extending longitudinally and drilled channels 34 and 35 extending transversely.
