Abstract

1,258,756. Filled polyamide blend filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 23 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 24831/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Delustered polyamide filaments resistant to acid dyes are made by blending (a) chips of a substituted copolyamide containing covalently bound anionic sulphonate gps. with (b) chips of a polyamide containing dispersed TiO 2 particles; melting the blended chips; and extruding to form filaments. The sulphonate content may be 60-150 Á-equiv. per g. filaments, and 100- 375 Á-equiv. per g. copolyamide. The copolyamide chips may be 40-60% wt. of the blend. In an example caprolactam, sulpho-isophthalic acid, Li 2 CO 3 , hexamethylene diamine, and water are heated at 260‹ C. to give a copolyamide of rel. viscosity 2-26 and amine gp. content of 38À8 Á-equiv./g., carboxylgp. content of 103 Á-equiv./g., and sulphonic acid content of 180 Á-equiv./g. The copolyamide is extruded into rods, cut into chips, and dried to moisture content < 0À06%. These chips are mixed with polycaproamide chips containing 0À8% anatase TiO 2 . Filaments were formed by melt-spinning to form a multifilament yarn and by extrusion through a multihole die on a screw-extruder. The composition had relative viscosity of 2À49- 2À71. The yarn was knitted and treated with a basic dye, which deeply coloured the filaments, and an acid dye, which was resisted by the filaments. Specification 901,938 is referred to.
