Abstract

1,156,251. Polyamide-polyester filaments. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 28 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34918/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A spinnable composition comprises a fibreforming polyamide having dispersed therein, based on the weight of the total composition, up to 50% of a fibre forming polyester and and 0À05 to 0À6% of a spinning aid which is a compound containing a C 12-22 straight chain acyl group and melting above 100‹ C. and which has a mould release index above 25 in pure polycaproamide. In the examples the polyamide and polyester are nylon 6 and polyethylene terephthalate and the spinning aids used are: Na, Ba, Ca, Cu, Li, Mg and Zn stearates; Na polmitate; ethylene-, methylene-, N,N<SP>1</SP>-hydrazine., p-phenylene-, p,p<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethyl-, and p-p<SP>1</SP>-diphenyl-, -bis(stearamide)s; ethylene bis-(behenamide); 1-stearate-4-stearamidebenzene; p - p<SP>1</SP> - diphenyl - ether - bis-(palmitamide) ; and p,p<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethyl-bis- (lauramide). In a preferred embodiment 10 to 50 wt per cent of polyester is dispersed as microfibres throughout the polyamide which has a reduced viscosity of 0À9 to 1À4 (being 0À9 to 2 times that of the polyester) and not more than 40% such groups reactive with the polyester in the melt; the polyester has glass transition temperature of at least 50‹ C. and above that of the polyamide. Spinning the Composition. In examples filaments are spun from such compositions at 265‹ or 275‹ C., air-cooled and taken up at speeds of 1130 or 1180 f.m. They are then passed over a 1¢ in. diameter drawpin to a contact surface heated at 185‹ or 135‹ C. and drawn at ratios from 5À23 to 5À72. The products have ultimate elongations from 14À5 to 15À9 and tensile strength from 8À2 to 9À75.
