965,729. Composite filaments. SOC. DE LA VISCOSE SUISSE. Aug. 30, 1962 [Sept. 9, 1961], No. 33409/62. Heading B5B. Composite filaments and yarns are made by melt-spinning two polymers of different melt viscosities side by side through the same spinneret orifice, the molten components being excluded at an inclination to the vertical centre line of the die body, opposite to the deflection caused by the difference in viscosities. The filaments are extruded through a die body in which the orifice capillaries are inclined with respect to the vertical centre line. In a multi-orifice spinneret, some or all of the orifice capillaries may be thus inclined. In an example, two polyhexamethylene adipamides of different melt viscosities are brought together from separate chambers and are spun, side by side without mixing, through a die body (Fig. 2) having spinneret orifices whose capillaries 9 make an angle # (30-45 degrees) with the vertical centre line. The angle of deflection α of the resulting composite filaments 8 is less than if the capillaries had been perpendicular to the face of the die. This reduction in the deflection angle permits the spinning of polymers of widely differing melt viscosities to form composite filaments capable of a high degree of crimp.
