Abstract

Composite filaments of the eccentric sheathcore type which undergo crimping when immersed in water, particularly hot water, are produced by extruding simultaneously through each extrusion orifice of a spinneret adapted for the melt-spinning of eccentric sheath-core filaments a melt of a homopolyamide (to form the sheath) and a melt of a copolyether amide (to form the core), which has been produced by polycondensation of adipic acid with 75 to 20 mol per cent of an ether diamine having the formula H 2 N-(CH 2 ) 3 -R-(CH 2 ) 3 -NH 2 in which R represents either -O-, or -O-(CH 2 ) n -O- in which n is 2 to 4, and 25 to 80 mol per cent of hexamethylene diamine. The two polymers shrink to different extents when immersed in water, particularly hot water. The sheath may consist of polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaprolactam, or polyaminoundecanoic acid. The composite filaments formed may be cold-stretched, e.g. at a stretch ratio of 3À5 : 1. The ratio by weight between the sheath and core of the composite filaments may be between 30 : 70 and 70 : 30, preferably 50 : 50. The shrinkage of the composite filaments may be determined after their immersion in water at 95 and 20 C.
