A roof or ceiling comprising screed 4 (e.g. lightweight or dense concrete) overlying concrete slab 2 is dried out by providing an air cavity or passages between the two layers and allowing air to pass through. Blocks 1 with communicating cavities 3 may be interposed between the layers with sheet 5 (e.g. of porous paper or asbestos) immediately below the screed and there may be gaps and holes provided from the blocks to allow air to circulate. The roof may be covered before or after drying by asphalt or bitumen.
