An I.C. engine is supercharged by a multistage axial-flow compressor driven by an exhaust gas turbine, the compressor having adjustable guide vanes to ensure that the compressor can operate in the region of maximum adiabatic efficiency under varying engine operating conditions. The turbine to be of multi-stage axialflow type.
