1,048,966. Axial-flow and centrifugal compressors. MIROSLAV VLASAK. April 2, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13613/64. Heading F1C. An axial-flow L.P. compressor and an axialflow or radial-flow H.P. compressor have separate shafts and casings, the common drive including step-up gearing so that the H.P. compressor runs faster than the L.P. compressor; an intercooler is provided between the compressors. Fig. 2 shows a compressor set comprising an electric motor 1 driving an axial-flow L.P. section 2 directly and driving a radial-flow H.P. section 40 through step-up gearing 3. An intercooler 5 is provided between the L.P. and H.P. sections, and one or more intercoolers 7 may be provided between stages of the H.P. section. A cooler may be provided beyond the H.P. section. The H.P. section may be of axialflow type and the motor 1 may be replaced by a steam or gas turbine. Both the L.P. and H.P. sections may be driven through step-up gearing, the speed of the H.P. section again being greater than that of the L.P. section.
