Abstract

1,256,073. Thermal regenerators. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. 28 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15368/68. Heading F4K. A thermal regenerator has a heat transfer mass 3 comprising particulate material which is fluidized by the heat exchanging fluids as they flow through the mass. As shown, the mass is contained in compartments formed in a stationary container 2 having end plates 5, 18 with ports 9, 12 therein by which the fluids enter and leave the mass. Plates 21 of perforated or porous material prevent contact between the mass particles and the container end plates. Rotary valve plates 4, 17 have ports therein positioned to permit alternate flow of the hot and cold fluids through the mass in the usual manner. The valve plates are interconnected by a shaft 15 and the lower plate has teeth 14 on its periphery so that it may be rotated by a gear or chain drive (not shown). Alternatively each valve plate may have means thereon whereby it is rotated by the velocity of the fluids in the manner of an inpulse turbine. In the arrangement shown the heating fluid enters at 10 and leaves at 20 and the higher pressure fluid to be heated enters at 1 and leaves at 19. The entry and exit ports for the fluids may be at the same end of the apparatus so enabling one valve plate only to be required.
