A swimming pool comprises a surrounding structure, which may be an earth structure 1 or a steel structure above ground, a waterproof skin 4, a corrosion-resistant, water-permeable wall 5 which extends upwardly from the bottom of the pool to a height generally in the plane of the top edge of the surrounding structure, and decking 10 which extends outwardly and substantially horizontally from the upper edge of wall 5 to the upper edge of the surrounding structure. The skin 4 may consist, for example of polyvinyl chloride or synthetic rubber sheeting and may rest on a lining 3 of foamed plastics material beneath which at the bottom of the pool there may be a layer of sand 2. The wall 5 consists of plastics bricks or a frame covered with plastics cladding material 9 which may continue across the base of the pool, and the wall may be water-permeable by virtue of the material from which they are made or by the provision of communicating passages. The frame may consist of vertical and horizontal members (6, 7) Fig. 2 (not shown) connected by a top rail (8) and may be of glass-reinforced plastics. The decking 10 may be of glass-reinforced plastics or wood.
