Abstract
1,255,878. Tension apparatus. H. BARTHE. 12 Dec., 1969 [14 Oct., 1969], No. 60845/69. Heading ASR. Apparatus for applying tension to the spine comprises a block 1 of a moulded material covered in a layer of anti-skid elastic material, and a second, smaller block (2) Fig. 2 (not shown) of similar construction mounted on a member 6 connected at an adjustable distance from the block 1, block 1 being slidably mounted on a member 4 which member carries apparatus for moving the block 1 in a controlled manner. The member 6 is connected, at each end, to bars 3' which bars are movable telescopically relative to bars 3 rigidly connected to the mounting means of the block 1, this movement being restrictable by the use of clamping screws 7. In use, the member 4 is preferably arranged in a vertical position and the neck is placed with the nape adjacent to the block 1, and the chin to the block (2). This assembly may then be raised, thereby applying tension to the spine, by means of a lever pivotally secured at 8 carrying a toothed sector 9' adapted to mesh with a rack 5' rigid with the block 1. A sliding bolt 10 is fixed to the sector 9' which cooperates through its tip with a toothed sector 11 rigid with the member 4. The lever 9 is adapted to be pulled downward by the patient, thereby raising the block 1, the bolt 10 maintaining the position. The tension may be released by compression of the handle 12 to the lever 9, the bolt thereby being withdrawn by the pulling on the cable 14. The member 4 may, alternatively, be placed in a horizontal position and attachments provided to secure the patient's feet to the member 4.
