Abstract

1,255,758. Longitudinal folders. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 8 May, 1970 [26 May, 1969], No. 22262/70. Heading B8R. A folder former 30 for doubling, longitudinally, a web 20 of material about a straight fold line 25 when the web 20 is pulled parallel to said fold line 25 so as to pass from one plane 24 over the former 30 in a direction at an obtuse angle with respect to the plane 24, includes edge portions 46 each being substantially in the form of a truncated cone pointing downstream of web travel and angled so that their centre lines 56 would, if extended, intersect on said fold line 25, the cone angles l, the angle 2s between the centre lines of the cones, and the angle 6 of inclination to the horizontal of the former being chosen so that any transverse line 51, 53 in a web passing over the former remains perpendicular throughout its length with respect to said fold line 25, the former also including a nose section 34 defining a substantially triangular surface 47 continuing the truncated ends of said cones and being curved to form an edge 48 coincident with said fold line 25. Four webs 20 of paper may be fed via rollers 14 to control rollers 21 where they are superimposed, pulled over the pivoted former 30, the angle of inclination of which is adjustable by nuts 32 on a rod 38, and doubled longitudinally with the folded edge 22 pressed between folding rollers 15. The edge portions 46 of the folder may be interconnected by a generally triangular plate 45 recessed so as not to contact the web. As a result of the continuous change in the angle of inclination of the nose section to meet the fold line its edges curve inwardly and closely fit the peripheries of former rollers 31.
