Abstract

1,255,286. Cold-cathode tubes. SIEMENS A.G. 8 Oct., 1970 [9 Oct., 1969], No. 47851/70. Heading H1D. A symmetrical surge voltage arrester comprises a tubular insulating body 1 and a pair of inwardly dished frusto-conical electrodes 2 and 3 mounted respectively in gas-tight fashion at either end of said body, the wall thickness of each electrode at its active surface 4, 5 adjacent to the other electrode being at least twice as great as the wall thickness of the conical side wall 6, 7 of the electrode in the neighbourhood of its junction with said body. The electrodes may be produced by drawing metal blanks. To form the arrester, electrodes 2, 3 of a Ni- Fe-Co alloy are sealed to a tubular insulating body 1 preferably of ceramic. The thickness (e.g. between 1 and 2 mm.) of the electrodes in the region of the active surfaces 4, 5 is preferably at least three times the thickness (e.g. 0À3 mm.) of the walls 6, 7. The thin walls form a barrier to the conduction of heat which is mainly absorbed in the thick portions of the electrodes and dissipated in solid metal contact pieces 8 and 9 brazed thereto.
