Gumming and pasting apparatus.-A machine for collating and adhesively joining sheets (or sheet units) U and L (e.g. for attaching separately printed advertisement sheets or tear-out printed post-cards within the pages of a multiple-page magazine or brochure) comprises converging sheet conveyers 21 and 22 for moving the sheets into face-to-face registering contact, means 140 along at least one of the conveyers for applying adhesive to portions of the sheets, timing means connected with the conveyers for controlling the sheet feed means 24, 25, feeding sheets U and L to the conveyers 21 and 22 and sheet detecting means, e.g. triggers 141 and 143 to enable the adhesive applying means only if both sheets are present at predetermined points on the conveyers. Feeding sheets.-Sheets L are fanned-out on conveyer 26 and fed individually by rotating suction drum 27 to the conveyer belts 45. The sheets are registered on the conveyer 45 by stops carried on chain 75 and arranged to pass between the runs of belts 45 and intercept the leading edges of the sheets as they are advanced. Sheets U are manually placed on conveyer 31 and fed to suction drum 32 which forwards them to conveyer belts 90 where they are registered by stops carried on chain 107 in a manner similar to that described for sheets L. The timing of pick-up by the drums 27 and 32 relative to the sheet advancing movements of conveyers 21 and 22, respectively, is controlled by cams driven by the associated conveyers and is adjustable to provide a predetermined longitudinal spacing of the sheets on each conveyer. The movement of registering stops on chain 75 is adjustable relative to belts 45 by advancing or retarding the chain. This adjustment permits accurate longitudinal positioning of the sheets to ensure accurate alignment when the sheets are brought together. The timing of the application of adhesive by nozzle 140 is controlled by a timing cam on the associated conveyer. Belts 125, 126 serve to hold the sheets in contact while the adhesive sets.
