[Also in Division E1] A lined underground cavity filled with aggregate 30 and enclosed by a top impermeable membrane 21b is used for fluid storage, the storage volume being calculated from the void volume remaining in a given volume of aggregate. The lining means may take the form of a plastics/rubber membrane or of the walls of an existing reservoir (Fig. 6). In the former case, the edges of the two membranes are connected to form a secure seal and wrapped around overflow pipe 50. A float 70 moving through guides 61 performs a scouring operation for sediment removal when extracting liquid from the reservoir. Other filter means are also described (40a, Fig. 2).
