Abstract

The valve comprises a flexible membrane (12) inside a pipe (10) connected into the line (11). The membrane is attached to its upper wall and is connected to an overhead tank (13) by means of a smaller pipe. The tank, filled with liquid, imparts a hydrostatic pressure on the membrane and, so long as the pressure of the medium to the pipeline is greater than the hydrostatic pressure, the valve is held open. If this pipe pressure decreases below the hydrostatic pressure, the membrane descends and closes the pipe. The tank may have a pressure applied to its surface to increase the hydrostatic loading.
