Abstract
1,059,494. Gas-holders. DEUTSHE ERDOLA.G. Feb. 14, 1964 [Feb. 14, 1963], No. 6321/64. Heading F4X. Gases in either the liquid or gaseous phase are stored in a container which is immersed in a body of liquid in a subterraneous cavity. As shown, two bell-shaped open bottomed containers 15 and 16 interconnected by rods 17 are immersed in a body of water or brine contained in a disused mine shaft. Butane is supplied to and withdrawn from container 16 through a pipe 18 and propane is supplied to and withdrawn from container 15 through a pipe 19. An overflow conduit 21 extending from above ground to a point near the bottom of container 15 is provided and has a branch conduit 22 communicating with a point adjacent the bottom of container 16. As the containers are charged with gas the liquid level therein falls until it reaches the bottom of conduits 21 and 22 and conversely the liquid level rises as the gases are discharged. The containers are immersed to a depth such that the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the liquid is not greater than the gas pressure plus the maximum external pressure that the container will withstand or less than the gas pressure minus the maximum internal pressure that the container will withstand and in the case of liquefied gas is greater than the critical pressure of the gas. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown), only one container is shown and in a further embodiment the container may be closed at its base. In this case an overflow conduit is again provided and liquid is admitted through this conduit from above ground to discharge the gas from the container and is expelled through the conduit during charging. The container may be made from metal or cement or, since it is not subjected to a large pressure difference, from a flexible plastics material.
