Abstract

A machine that may be a pump or motor has an inter-meshing stator-and-rotor mechanism 32, 33 of the n and n + 1 tooth type and a rotary valve-member 28 co-operating with a fixed valvemember 29 to control the flow of working fluid, the member 28 being coupled to a shaft 39 with splined ends linking said mechanism to a main shaft 41. The mode of connection between the member 28 and the shaft 39 is such that as the rotor element 33 revolves in a planetary manner said member rotates about a fixed axis. In one arrangement a square portion 38 of the shaft 39 slidingly engages with a slot in a member 78 that slides between parallel surfaces 103, 104 on the member 28. A member (105), Figs. 17 to 19 (not shown), may replace the member 78. Alternative arrangements are described with reference to Figs. 25 to 31 (not shown), wherein a radial arm, or "finger", (95) or a circular cam (107 or 108) replaces the portion 38. The member 28 has slots 83, 84 to control corresponding openings, Fig. 9 (not shown), in the member 29. An annular reservoir 75 and an opening 77 are connected to inlet and outlet ports, Fig. 11 (not shown). Axial pressures on walls 87, 88 in the member 28 are balanced by pressures on surfaces 94, 98.
