Abstract

1,253,357. Levels. PARRY & BOTT Ltd. Feb. 13, 1969 [Feb. 16, 1968], No. 7608/68. Heading G1F. A spirit level comprises a body 10 e.g. of I- section metal having a first pair of spaced parallel working faces 14 and a second pair of spaced parallel working faces perpendicular to the first pair and constituted by the machined edges of the I-section, and at least one bubble-level tube 25 having a barrel-shaped bore mounted with the axis of the bore parallel to all the working faces of the level and disposed so that it is visible when viewed in directions parallel to the faces 14. In this way, for low work, the level may be set on a surface to be checked, as shown in the figure, the tube 25 being easily seen from above, and for work at eyelevel the surfaces 14 may be used the tube 25 being viewed from the side. The web 11 of the I- section body is provided with apertures 17 for ease of handling of the level, and a triangular aperture 18 for hanging the level. Ends 19 for the level are provided and are shaped to be a press-fit in the ends of the I-section body. Further apertures are pointed in the web 11 for mounting the bubble 25 and also plumb level tubes 26 for checking whether surfaces are vertical. Each of the tubes 25, 26 is formed from a rectangular block of synthetic resinous material and machined with a barrelshaped bore with two grooves containing metal rings acting as indicators for when the tube is level. The tubes preferably contain a coloured liquid, and the side faces of the blocks are convex so as to magnify the tube when viewed therethrough. The tubes are mounted in the level by being secured by screws and spigots to a cover-plate at one side of the web 11, a spring washer being interposed between the level and the cover-plate so that the position of the tube relative to the web 11 may be set to the desired position. The cover-plates are mounted by screws to the level body there being sufficient clearance between the screws and the mounting holes in the cover-plates to allow the tubes to be set correctly relative to the faces 14, The screws once set are prevented from moving by adhesive, and a futher cover-plate is fixed to the other side of the web. As an alternative to the I- section body described, hardwood or tubular metal may be used.
