Abstract
1,252,327. Heat-setting yarns. W. A. SEEM, N. J. STODDARD, F. C. TECCE, and H. P. BERGER, [trading as PERMATWIST CO.]. 17 April, 1969 [19 April, 1968], No. 19585/69. Heading B5B. False-twisted thermoplastic yarn is heated by passage over a moving surface in the form of a belt or one or more rollers within a heated atmosphere, in the absence of a decreasing temperature gradient in a direction away from said surface. The atmosphere alone or the atmosphere and the surface may be directly heated. As illustrated, yarn Y passes into an insulated chamber 11 through a heated pipe 29; is wound around a roller 15, the turns of the yarn being separated by projections 41, and is fed out through the pipe 29A. The atmosphere in the enclosure is maintained at a uniform temperature by an element 28 and circulated by a fan 25. Material suspended in the atmosphere is removed via a conduit. Additional heating of the roller may be effected by resistance heating elements. If two rollers are employed, Fig. 5, not shown, they may be joined by a fan-belt, Fig. 18, not shown. Alternatively, four rollers, Fig. 6, not shown, a perforated roll Fig. 15, not shown, or a self-advancing Godet-roll may be employed. The apparatus may be divided into two successive chambers, Fig. 21, not shown, the first chamber, in which the heating roller is situated, being maintained at a lower temperature than the second. The yarn may be led out of and back into the first chamber to cool it, Fig. 22, not shown. The false-twisting device may be situated before or after the heating device.
