Abstract

1,251,979. Multi-colour electro-photographic process. RICOH K. K. Oct.30, 1968 [Oct. 31, 1967], No. 51524/68. Heading G2H. Multi-colour electro-photographs are made by subjecting a photo-conductive surface to at least three successive treatments each comprising i) uniformly charging said surface, ii) exposing said surface imagewise to a colour component of the multi-colour image to be reproduced, the colour component being different in each treatment, to form a latent image and iii) developing said latent image by applying a liquid developer of a colour selected according to the colour component used to form the latent image, the said liquid developer comprising or dispersion in a hydrocarbon carrier liquid of resistivity at least 10<SP>9</SP> ohm. cm. and dielectric constant not greater than 3 of a toner composed of pigment particles coated with a polarity control resin which is an acrylic, methacrylic, acrylate or methacrylate polymer, the liquid developers used in the said three or more successive treatments being used in the order of increasing solubility of the toner polarity control resin in the carrier liquid. Such an order of use reduces the tendency of a later developer in the successive treatments to remove pigment from an already-developed image. The liquid developers preferably number four, having the colours red, blue, black and yellow and being used in that order. Toner polarity control resins specified include polylsutyl methacrylate, the copolymers butyl methacrylate/styrene, lauryl methacrylate/styrene and lauryl methacrylate/ hydroxyethyl methacrylate and terpolymers of styrene/hydroxyethyl methacrylate/lauryl methacrylate. Conventional hydrocarbon carrier liquids of the naphtha type are used.
