Abstract

1,255,018. Electro-photographic liquid development. RICOH K.K. Nov.6, 1968 [Nov.6, 1967], No.52650/68. Heading G2H. An electro-photographic latent image on a support is developed by immersing the support in a liquid developer comprising a dispersion of a toner in an electrically insulating carrier liquid, said toner comprising particles of pigment coated with an alkyd resin, phenol resin, vinyl resin or methacrylate resin, said carrier liquid comprising a mixture of two liquids one having a greater solvent power for said resin than the other and both being selected from n-paraffinic hydrocarbons, isoparaffinic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbon mixtures including paraffins and aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons, wherein the said mixture contains a sufficiently high proportion of the liquid of lower solvent power for the resin to impart a negative charge to the toner particles. Specified pigment particles are carbon black, resins include proprietory alkyd and phenol resins and copolymers of lauryl methacrylate with dimethyl or diethyl aminoethyl methacrylate or with styrene, and carrier liquids include chlorofluorohydrocarbons (e.g. CCl 3 F, CCl 2 F-CClF 2 , (CCl 2 F) 2 , perchlorethylene, CCl 4 , toluene, and various proprietory isoparaffinic or petroleum hydrocarbons.
