Abstract

1,008,789. Electro photographic processes. MINNESOTA MINING and MANUFACTURING CO. April 9, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 13662/62. Heading G2H [Also in Division H1] Colour xerographic plates consisting of a conductive substrate carrying a regular or random pattern of minute photoconductive areas coloured cyan, yellow and magenta and selectivity sensitive to red, green and blue light respectively (see Division H1) are exposed and developed in the following manner. The coloured image to be reproduced is formed on the plate or projected on it through red, blue and green filters in turn. To develop the resulting conductivity image the plate may be placed in an electrolyte containing a suspension or emulsion of positively or negatively charged resin particles which, if not inherently white, contain white inorganic pigments such as titanium dioxide and zinc sulphide. Suitable resins are polymers of fatty acids and polyamines, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, polyvinylacetate, silicones, and epoxy resins all of which are positively charged in emulsion or suspension and nylon, polyethylene, chlorinated rubber, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene copolymers, and acrylic polymers and copolymers which are negatively charged. With the conductive support as anode or cathode as the case may be electrolysis results in deposition of the resin on the areas rendered conductive by exposure to the light to which they are sensitive. An alternative procedure is to develop the image cathodically in an aqueous solution of silver sulphate or copper sulphate to deposit metal before developing as described above. If suitable e.g. certain triphenylmethane and azo dyes are used as colourants these may be bleached out by electrolytic treatment in aqueous ethyl alcohol containing zinc chloride. A further alternative is to place the plate in a corona discharge into which white particles are sprayed. After development in any of these ways in the red areas of the image for instance, the cyan coloured photoconductive areas are covered or bleached out leaving only magenta and yellow coloured areas giving the effect of dull red, and so on. The image may be brightened by heating, or moistening the plate with a solvent for the dyes to locally intermingle the remaining colours. To produce a charge image which may be electrostatically developed the plate is either uniformly charged before exposure, or is subsequently charged through the conductivity pattern. The resulting image is developed by positively or negatively charged white resin particles. For example a developer consisting of a powder of polyvinyl chloride pigmented with titanium dioxide and mixed with powdered alumina to increase its fluidity is flowed over the plate in a tray, the image fixed by heating and a protective layer of wax or lacquer applied if desired. If the lacquer contains a suitable solvent this also causes local mixing of the colours, thus rendering a separate treatment for this purpose unnecessary.
