[Also in Division E1] A block of parquet flooring comprises a plurality of elongated slats of wood (e.g. red oak) impregnated throughout the total thickness thereof with a monomer, e.g. methyl methacrylate, subsequently polymerized to a polymer having high resistance to wear due to abrasion, said slats having a substantially uniform size with dimensions of 3-12 inch in length, ¢-2¢ inch in width, and #-# inch in thickness, and a backing member secured to a lower surface of each slat in said block and forming a flooring unit having a thickness less than # inch to hold said blocks together. The monomer-treated wood can also be used in veneer layer or sheet form to form a laminate block flooring. Fig. 12 illustrates a parquet flooring unit comprising a plurality of squares 212 composed of slats 214, the upper periphery of the unit having chamfer 218. Fig. 13 shows how the slats 214 are assembled on a loosely woven backing member 216. In Fig. 15 a block of flooring is illustrated wherein the slats 228 are secured together by two strips 230, 232 of fibrous material that absorbs the monomer impregnant, e.g. paperboard or felt. Another securing means is illustrated in Fig. 16 where the slats 234 are provided with a slot 236 along the ends and a spline or dowel 238 is provided in the slot. Fig. 18 illustrates a laminated construction wherein the upper layer 246 may be a face veneer having a thickness of about 1/10 inch; small grooves 248 can be provided to produce small sections which simulate a slat construction used in parquet flooring; the lower layer 250 serves as a backing member; and one or more cross-bands may be provided as layer 252 having their grain disposed at not less than 45 degrees from the direction of the grain of the adjacent sheets; all the layers being joined together with a suitable adhesive.
