[Also in Division C3] A method for converting wood to a woodplastic composite comprises placing the wood into a canister, evacuating the canister to create a negative pressure therein, filling the canister with a liquid monomer, e.g. methyl methacrylate, and effecting impregnation of the wood by the monomer, draining excess monomer from the canister, then polymerising the monomer within the wood, and removing the composite thus obtained from the canister. The monomer may include a polymerisation catalyst and the polymerisation can be effected by application of heat or irradiation, e.g. gamma radiation. Apparatus for carrying out the method is described. Red oak is mentioned as a type of wood suitable for forming parquet flooring blocks.
