A lightweight concrete is impregnated by a polymerizable substance or mixture to a depth of 0À5 to 5 mms. for at least a portion of its surface, and then exposed to ions or heated to form and harden the polymer. Acrylates, styrene, vinyls (acetate carbazole and chloride) epoxy resins, polyesters and graft polymers are suitable impregnants. A prepolymer in a monomer diluent can also be used, the concrete comprising sand, cement, lime and aluminium.
