Abstract

1,249,244. Friction clutches; ratchet clutches; change-speed gearing; reverse gearing. J. GO. 22 Sept., 1969 [21 Sept., 1968], No. 46680/68. Headings F2C and F2D. In a one-way or bi-directional clutch having wedging balls, sprags or rollers 10 between a recess or flat 5 on a driven shaft 3 and a driving drum 17, an axially slidable control sleeve 9 has an aperture 8 which permits the wedging action and a slot 7 which disengages the clutch by holding the rollers 10 centrally relative to the flat 5. Projections 6 on the shaft 3 prevents rotation of the sleeve 9 relative to the shaft 3. As shown, the aperture 8 is formed by widening the slot 7 on both sides of the slot to provide a bi-directional drive, but the aperture 8 may be formed by widening the slot 7 on one side only (Fig. 6, not shown) to provide a disengageable one-way clutch. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the rollers 10 are replaced by sprags housed in recesses in the shaft 3. In Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), a change-speed gear comprises driven gears (11A ... 11D), in constant mesh with driving gears (4A ... 4D) fast with a driving shaft (2) and the driven gears (11A ... 11D) are selectively clutched to a driven shaft (3) by wedging roller clutches (5A ... 5D) controlled by a single axially slidable control sleeve (9). In Fig. 7 (not shown), a bevel reverse gear comprises side wheels (11, 11B) selectively clutched to an output shaft (3) by wedging roller clutches (5A, 5B) controlled by a control sleeve (9).
