Abstract
1,248,202. Impelling tools. H. C. TAMPIN. 9 Oct., 1968 [12 July, 1967], No. 31988/67. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F2] A portable motor for driving a tool comprises a two mass vibratory resonant system including a driving mass held by the operator when the motor is driving a tool, a driven mass to which the tool is to be attached, block spring means compressed between and anchored to internal faces of one mass and opposed faces of the other mass to provide a resilient connection between the masses, and actuating means to be driven by a power source, the actuating means when driven causing the system to vibrate, the arrangement being such that a tool driven by the motor will reciprocate while the spring means undergo cyclic shear strain. As illustrated the tool is a drill bit 11 and the actuating means is an electromagnet with poles 4, 4a attached to casing 1 which constitutes the driving mass and an armature 13 attached to block 10 which constitutes the driven mass. An A.C. or pulsating D.C. supply to coil 7 effects reciprocation of the tool 11. In alternative embodiments reciprocation is effected by two pairs of eccentric masses (Fig. 2) or a compressed air system (Fig. 3). In the Fig. 2 embodiment each pair of masses is driven by a motor which may be operated electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically, or by an I.C. motor. Alternatively the two pairs of masses may be driven by a single motor.
