Abstract
1,248,057. Brake and clutch linings. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE. 7 Oct., 1968 [11 Oct., 1967], No. 47470/68. Headings F2C and F2E. A brake lining or a clutch lining has a friction surface presented by a plasma deposited layer of a material crystallizing in the hexagonal system. The lattic relation c/a is of the order of 1À633 where c is the distance separating two adjacent atoms from one of the two hexagonal planes to the other and a is the distance separating the adjacent atoms in the same hexagonal plane. Metals having a c/a value approximating to 1À633 are cobalt, magnesium, neodymium, titanium, and yttrium. They can be in the pure state or alloyed with one or several of the others. They may also be alloyed with one or several metals, oxides or carbides which have not an hexagonal structure, to an extent where nevertheless the hexagonal structure of the initial metal is preserved in the alloys formed. Examples of non-hexagonal metals are chromium, lanthanum, molybdenum, rhenium, samarium, tungsten, aluminium, copper, iron, nickel, niobium. Examples of the carbides are TaC, TiC, MoC, WC, Cr 3 C 2 . Cr 2 O 3 is representative of the oxides. Cobalt alloys are also specified. Solid lubricant such as graphite, MoS 2 , CaF, BaF, NbS 2 , WS 2 may be incorporated. The linings are preferably made of a ferromagnetic material which is porous, preferably microporous, for use in electromagnetic brakes or clutches.
