Abstract

1385479 Friction linings for clutches or brakes; composite friction surfaces CENTRE NATIONALE DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE 10 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 57547/71 Addition to 1248057 Headings F2E and F2C A friction lining for the armature of a friction clutch or a brake comprises a plasma deposited layer of a material crystallizing in the hexagonal system, the lining comprising solidified particles, previously melted by the plasma spraying, and the base planes 001 of a major proportion of the crystals of the lining material are orientated substantially parallel to the surface of the lining support. The lining can comprise one of, or an alloy of a plurality of, the following materials: cobalt, magnesium, neodymium, titanium, yttrium, tungsten in its hexagonal form, nickel in its hexagonal form, MoC, WC, Cr2O3, neodymiumtitanium, Mo2C, NbC, Ta2C, W2C, TiO2 and may also contain a proportion of molybdenum, chromium, aluminium, copper, iron, B4C, TaC, TiC, Cr3C2, VC, ZrC, ZrO2 or Al2O3. Fig. 19 shows an application of the invention to electromagnetic friction clutches or brakes wherein two separate layers are sprayed on to a support 80 shaped as shown and the surface is polished to remove part of the top layer and expose areas of the bottom layer (92a, 92b). The top layer need not be of paramagnetic material if the layer beneath is of such a material, lines of force passing through areas 92a and 92b.
