A woven fabric comprises a plurality of stripes A, B, Fig. 1, extending in the warp direction, each consisting of hairpin like weft loops 2 interwoven with warp threads 1 and inserted in the same direction, the inserted weft loops 2 within each stripe terminating in end bights 6 locked to each other in the form of wales and successive weft loops 2b, 2, 2a being interconnected by connecting bights 7 which either pass around end bights 6 of weft loops of the adjacent stripe or around a warp thread (1a) Fig. 3 (not shown) of the adjacent stripe. In Fig. 1 the bight 7 interconnecting loops 2b, 2, and stripe B passes around the end bight 6 of loop 2 in stripe A; alternatively in Fig. 2 (not shown) the bight 7 of loops 2b, 2 in stripe B passes around bight 7 of the loop 2a in stripe A. The bights 6 may be closed (Fig. 1) or open Fig. 4 (not shown). The fabric is formed on a loom comprising an oscillatory weft inserting needle 9 corresponding to each stripe, the needles being pivoted at 11 on a bar 12 and arranged obliquely so as to pass into the shed from above. The end bights 6 are interlocked by a latched knitting needle 10 associated with each needle 9.
