Abstract
1,247,662. Cable glands. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. 21 Nov., 1968 [23 Aug., 1967], No. 38865/67. Heading H2E. A gland at the entrance of a terminal box 11 secures the armouring 13 and sheathing 12 of a power cable 10 emerging from ground 16, and comprises a sleeve 22, preferably brass, secured to lead sheath 12 by a wiped joint 30 of solder or lead, and sleeve 25, preferably steel, which together with sleeve 22, clamps a stripped-back portion 13<SP>1</SP> of steel armouring 13. Sleeves 22 and 25 are clamped together by a nut 27 cooperating with a thread in a cylindrical portion 21 of sleeve 22. Sleeves 22 and 25 may be cut shorter to allow cables of larger diameter to pass through them. Sleeve 22 is earthed at 34, and may be insulated from a mounting 28 by bushings (35), (Fig. 4, not shown) around bolts 36. Box 11, of neoprene and filled with insulating oil, is sealed to the gland by a hose clip 31. In another embodiment (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) a wiped joint 30 is made between sheath 12 and the tapering surface (102) of a sleeve (100), and armouring 13 is clamped between a sleeve (107) and a surface (104) of sleeve (100) which tapers in the opposite direction to surface (102). Also, to reduce cable whip, a steel sleeve 108, cut to size, is positioned below the surface (104) to co-operate with a lower portion of sleeve (107) and armouring 13<SP>1</SP>, which force sleeve (108) into engagement with a bedding layer 14 for armouring 13. That part of the gland beneath mounting 28 is protected by a cover (115) filled with oil.
