A device for operating a pivotally mounted portal 13, e.g. a coke oven door, having a handle 27 pivoted thereto, comprises a pivotally mounted arm 1 for opening and closing the door, a member 3 movably mounted at or adjacent one end of the arm 1 and including a hook part 2 for engaging the handle 27, a cam surface 26 and a latching arm 20, the arrangement being such that when the hook part 2 engages the handle 27 to hold the door open, pivotal movement of the arm 1 in a first sense closes the door and further pivotal movement of the arm in the first sense, after closure of the door causes the cam surface 26 to engage the handle which initially causes the handle to pivot into engagement with an abutment 28 to lock the door in the closed position and subsequently cause movement of the member 3 such that the latching arm 20 engages releasable latch means 4, which thereby holds the member 3 in such a position, that on subsequent movement of the arm 1 in the opposite sense the member 3 is spaced from the handle to prevent engagement of the handle 27 by the hook part 30. As shown, the member 3 is pivotally mounted on the arm 1, which is part of a lever 22, the other arm 25 of which is connected to a piston and cylinder operating device 7. The member 3 is provided with a counterweight 5 which biases the member 3 towards the position in which the hook part 30 can engage the handle 27. The latch means 4 is a pawl pivoted to the arm 1.
