Abstract

1,247,052. Masted lift trucks; counterbalancing. KNICKERBOCKER CO. 13 Aug., 1968 [15 Aug., 1967], No. 38592/68. Headings B8B and B8H. The bending moment created by a load on the forks of a mast assembly is counterbalanced by a bending moment produced by chains of the assembly acting on rearwardly projecting arms on the upper mast section. As shown in Fig. 2, a mast assembly comprises a lifting carriage 42 guided on an upper mast section 40 which is guided in a bracket 102 on the lifting ram piston rod 60 and is also guided by the lower fixed mast section 34 when lowered from the position shown. The cylinder 56 of the ram is guided by rollers 90, 92 for movement on the fixed mast section. The movable mast section 40 is raised, on extension of the ram, by chains 62 anchored to the mast section 40 and to the ram cylinder 56 and passing over pulleys 80 on the piston-rod. Chains 58, anchored to the lifting carriage 42 and to the fixed mast section 34, pass around pulleys 70, 72, on cantilever arms 64 secured to the movable mast section, around pulleys 74, 76, on cantilever arms 68 secured to the fixed mast section, and under pulleys 78 mounted on the ram cylinder 56. In operation, on extending the ram from its retracted position, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lifting carriage and movable mast section rise until the carriage engages a stop at the top of the movable section, Fig. 3 (not shown), whereafter, continued extension of the ram causes the ram cylinder to rise on the fixed mast section and the movable mast section to rise out of engagement with the fixed section to the fully raised position shown in Fig. 2. The fork arms 66 are supported on a plate 302 which is connected by pivoted links 294, 296 to the lifting carriage 266, rams 322 being provided for tilting the fork between the positions shown in Fig. 22, as described in Specification 1,247,053. Alternative mast constructions are described with reference to Figs. 23-26 (not shown).
