1,246,882. Papermaking. T. KOBAYASHI. 13 Jan., 1969, No. 1847/69. Heading D2A. A papermaking machine consists of a vertical arrangement of a number of identical, symmetrical pairs of independent web-forming units (e.g. Dl and D2; E1 and E2; Fl and F2; Fig. 2), each of the units having a wire cylinder (81 for D2), set at the outer end of the unit of which the cylinder is a part; a feed roll 80 and a couch roll 82 set above and below, respectively, the wire cylinder, and in contact with endless felt 79, held by these rolls against wire cylinder 81; a flow box 98 which directs a flow of stock towards the feed roll, felts 79 and 66 converging after the last pair of web-forming units, to form a single, combined web, e.g. by the arrangement of press and suction press rolls 73-77. The wire cylinder may be wrapped by a wire-cloth, a horizontal portion of the wire's path passing foil and suction boxes, before the wire passes over the wire cylinder. The arrangement may also include savealls 90, 91, 92, and suction unit 93, for removing liquid from the off-running portion of the roll, where the felt diverges away.
