Cutters; shaping by cutting.-Cutters for shaping aircraft propeller blades, struts, &c. comprise a number of circular saws h of gradually increasing diameters and with teeth of diminishing pitch assembled on a shaft to form a cutter of conical or conoidal shape tapering from a roughing-saw of coarsest pitch and smallest diameter to the finishing-saw of finest pitch and greatest diameter. The saws may be arranged at right-angles to the shaft, or obliquely thereto as shown in Fig. 5, or they may be variously arranged, for example as shown in Fig. 6. A copying-machine in which the cutters may be used comprises a bracket e carrying the cutter h and a tracer n of a diameter equal to that of the finishing-saw, engaging respectively with the rotating work p and a dummy o. The bracket e is carried by a compound slide b, b<1> and is traversed along the work by a screw c, while a weighted lever d maintains the tools in contact with the work and the dummy. The cutter shaft may be parallel or inclined to the longitudinal slide b.
