Abstract

1,246,080. Micro-biological testing. WARNER-LAMBERT CO. June 9, 1970 [June 24, 1969], No.27894/70. Heading C6F. A diagnostic composition for the detection of nitrite comprises a bibulous material test strip containing at least four impregnated zones, viz. A nitrate-containing medium, B an inert hydrophobic barrier composition, separating zone A from all succeeding impregnated zones, C contains (i) an amino-substituted naphthalene-sulphonic acid and (ii) alkali metal (sodium) salts of sulphanilic acid, sulphadiazine or alkali metal salts of sulphathiazole, and D one or more of citric, malonic and oxalic acids. The zone D reagent may be applied to the bibulous material on the reverse side of zone C in a back-to-back relationship. An additional hydrophobic barrier zone B may be positioned contiguous to the outermost reagent-impregnated zone. Beyond this, there may be an untreated zone and at the end of the strip remote from zone A, a zone E impregnated with an identifying dye (specified). The nitrate-containing medium includes beef extract, peptone and potassium nitrate, and the hydrophobic barrier composition of zone B preferably comprises a methyl methacrylate coating composition, 5-amino-1-naphthalene, 5-amino-2-naphthalene and 8-amino-2-naphthalene sulphonic acids are specified.
